چکیده

Eight molecular dynamics simulations of a hydrated lipid bilayer have been carried out differing only in the applied surface tension, g, defining the boundary conditions of the periodic cell. The calculated surface area per molecule and deuterium order parameter profile are found to depend strongly on g. We present several methods to calculate the area compressibility modulus, KA , from the simulations. Equivalence between the constant area and constant surface tension ensembles is investigated by comparing the present simulations with earlier work from our laboratories and we find simulation results to depend much more strongly on the specified surface area or surface tension than on the ensemble employed. © 1999 American Institute of Physics. @S0021-9606~99!71327-9#

Spatial and energetic-entropic decomposition of surface tension in lipid bilayers from molecular dynamics simulations

The spatial and groupwise distribution of surface tension in a fully hydrated 256 lipid dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine ~DPPC! bilayer is determined from a 5 ns molecular dynamics simulation by resolving the normal and lateral pressures in space through the introduction of a local virial. The resulting surface tension is separated into contributions from different types of interactions and pairw...

Computer simulation of liquid/liquid interfaces. II. Surface tension-area dependence of a bilayer and monolayer

A constant normal pressure-surface tension algorithm for molecular dynamics simulation, developed in the preceding paper, was used to laterally expand and compress the surface area of a dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine ~DPPC! lipid bilayer. Then, from simulations carried out at constant normal pressure and surface area, values of the surface tension and other thermodynamic variables such as the i...

Investigation of finite system-size effects in molecular dynamics simulations of lipid bilayers.

In the absence of external stress, the surface tension of a lipid membrane vanishes at equilibrium, and the membrane exhibits long wavelength undulations that can be described as elastic (as opposed to tension-dominated) deformations. These long wavelength fluctuations are generally suppressed in molecular dynamics simulations of membranes, which have typically been carried out on membrane patc...

Partial rigid-body dynamics in NPT, NPAT and NPT ensembles for proteins and membranes

A partial rigid-body method of molecular dynamics simulations for proteins and membranes is presented. In this method, the symplectic integrator for rigid bodies is combined with the equations of motion for the NPT ensemble. The standard NPT ensemble is extended to the membrane-specific ensembles, the NPAT (constant normal pressure and lateral surface area of membranes and constant temperature)...

On the Equivalence of Schemes for Simulating Bilayers at Constant Surface Tension.

Lipid bilayers are simulated using flexible simulation cells in order to allow for relaxations in area per lipid as bilayer content and temperature are varied. We develop a suite of Monte Carlo (MC) moves designed to generate constant surface tension γ and constant pressure P and find that the NPT partition function proposed by Attard [J. Chem. Phys.1995, 103, 9884-9885] leads to an NPγT partit...
